Art Sales Planned During Family Weekend posted 10/26/06
Variety of Events Planned on Campus

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College Dawson Scholars and Business Students are hosting the “Ten Thousand Villages” art sale during the upcoming Family Weekend, for the second year in a row. The sale is scheduled in the Alumni Lounge in North Hall on Friday Nov. 3 from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday Nov. 5 from noon to 4 p.m.

Some of the many items available for sale include holiday décor, jewelry, stationary, home décor, baskets and toys.

Also scheduled is the Student Pottery Sale, hosted by the art department. Come to Caine Student Center, Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The proceeds of the pottery sale benefit equipment for the ceramics area at AC. In the past the "pot sale fund" has purchased 11 electric potters wheels, a high fire reduction gas kiln, a salt kiln, stools, an extruder, a pug mill, and soon it will help with the building of a new wood kiln. Without this important sale ceramics students would have very little to work with. The work is donated by staff and students to benefit students.

Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit organization founded to help artisans in Third World countries distribute their handcrafted works. They offer distribution routes to those who otherwise do not have the means needed to make a profit. The artists set the price for their pieces and the profit is returned to them so that they are able to support their families.

The Dawson Scholars are the recipients of the John Harper Dawson scholarship. Between two and five Dawson Scholarships are awarded to the top business students each year. The scholarship pays for tuition their junior and senior years. In return for the scholarships the students are required to do activities and services related to business to benefit the campus and community.

Family Weekend is scheduled annually as an opportunity for students to have their family members come sample the college experience. College events for the weekend include the student musical, athletic events, the annual student art exhibition, “Family Olympics,” and inflatables at the center of campus.
