Frequently Asked Questions of the Public Relations Office

What are the responsibilities of Public Relations?

The public relations office is responsible for creating a marketing strategy and image for the college. The public relations staff offers support services to faculty, staff and students in a variety of ways, including representing the college to the public and the media, and providing external publications, crisis communications, photography and other public relations assistance.

Can I get media coverage for my event?

Is your AC event open to the public? The public relations office releases information about such events to the media. We use calendar items, story ideas, feature articles, photo opportunities, news releases, public service announcements, expert sources and other media tools to get exposure for your event and for Adrian College. Send information to Brad Whitehouse, Rush Union, or email bwhitehouse@adrian.edu. Be sure to answer who, what, where, when, why, how and include ticket cost, a brief description, if it's open to the public, and a name and telephone number for more information.

What if I need a poster or brochure?

The P.R. office has a full time graphic designer, who is willing to help with design.  She can also give advice on printing on campus vs. off campus and show you ways to cut costs.  It is important to remember that if you design something that will go off campus, the P.R. office must see it before it is printed.  If you have questions on printing or design call 264-3862 or email mboyd@adrian.edu.

Can you put this in the paper?

The P.R. office can not "put" anything in the paper.  We can send out a press release to alert the media, but it is up to them to run it.

What is news?

Editors and reporters define "news" as information that is timely, new and relevant to the lives of readers, viewers and listeners. It can be happening now or in the future. Remember, annual events that offer nothing new provide little "news."

What kind of news are you looking for?

Unique people, student activities and aspects of student and college life that are part of a larger trend in society; expert commentary on and interpretation of current events, especially if it contributes to a new or controversial point of view; original research findings that can be tied to current events or trends in society; books by professors on current issues; programs that represent a solution to a national problem or response to a national trend. And we're always looking for calendar items to help publicize events, or a good photo that shows action, human interest or is very uncommon and unique.

Why wasn't my child's name in our local paper?

The P.R. office sends press releases to students' local papers, including when they graduate, are named to the Dean's List, or are recognized for a sports achievement. It takes an average of two weeks to compile and send information for the Dean's List and graduation, and some time longer for papers to publish it.  If you believe your child has been overlooked, please call the P.R. office at 517-264-3175.
