Michigan State Governor Rick Snyder Visits Adrian College

ADRIAN, Mich. – On May 11th, Governor Rick Snyder visited Adrian College to speak with the Board of Trustees during a private visit to campus. It would be the first time in nearly 24 years that a sitting governor would visit the College.

Governor Snyder congratulated the college on its continued progressive approach to higher education, commending President Docking for his leadership.

“It [is] an entrepreneurial, innovative atmosphere, of how do you grow? How do you succeed?” Snyder stated during a brief speech to the Trustees. “How do you give better service to your customers: the students and their parents? That’s very much the same approach we take in government.”

The businessman turned politician; Snyder was a relative dark horse to the political realm two years ago. In his first campaign for Governor he challenged the better-known rivals to take the reins in the capital of Michigan. He continues to strive toward extraordinary things with aspirations beyond traditional thinking. A relation he made to Adrian College during his brief tour of the facilities and it’s intent to deliver on high expectations.

Adrian College Celebrates Spring Commencement

ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College is pleased to announce that on Sunday April 29, 2012, over 300 graduates received their diplomas. For the second year, commencement was held on the mall at the center of campus before more than 3,000 attendees.

Beneath the new pergola on Commencement Plaza, Adrian College alumnus Richard D. Kibbey introduced the 2012 commencement speaker, Mr. Pat Boone.

Boone described himself as a “fellow student” and discussed his journey of lifelong learning. He noted that he was a professional entertainer with over 50 years of experience in Hollywood, always understanding that he was somewhat of an outsider to the well-known ways of the entertainment business. He knew there was a perception that he was too straight-laced, too conservative, and too religious. Despite those perceptions, he was able to “entertain families”, without sacrificing his “moral upbringing or the biblical values” which shaped his decisions. Those decisions included foregoing the offer to make a movie with Marilyn Monroe. Boone told the class of 2012 that he was never “in” when it came to show business.
Boone never lost sight of his pursuit of a college education. His lifelong journey, following his role as a Hollywood star, husband, and father, included a priority of finishing a college degree.

“I had decided that the best way I could live this one life was to stand in the crossroads of other young lives and try to point [them] toward Heaven, no matter what professional course they may take.”

Boone described the way in which he could play a role in persuading young people to aim high, and to be the best that they could be. He stated that there was one certain way to find the path to success,

“Make God your agent. He gave you your talents and can help develop your skills. He can open the doors of opportunity that no one else can.”

As he concluded his address, Mr. Boone reminded the graduates of the guidelines for successful living, achieving goals and avoiding the traps that often derail success.

“I urge you to continue being students,” Boone said. “Walk into your future, fellow students, and go with God.”

Preceding his address, Boone was recognized for his lifetime achievements and was presented with an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.

Ms. Hildreth Houston Spencer, Legacy Friend, Educator, and Philanthropist and Mrs. Ingrid Cornelius Roberts, Legacy Friend and Philanthropist were also recognized for their contributions to the college, as they were, (Roberts posthumously), awarded the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.

In a new tradition, the first Faculty Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Robert Husband, Ph.D., Zoology was also announced. The esteemed Dr. Husband joined the faculty in 1964, and remains an active researcher and collaborator on campus.

The College congratulates all of its 2012 spring graduates, acknowledges their accomplishments, and wishes them success in their future endeavors.

Adrian College Loses Beloved Colleague And Friend

Adrian College lost a dear colleague and friend on March 24, 2012. Jane McCloskey, former Director of Academic Services, died surrounded by family in Chicago. While at the College, Jane directed the TRIO funded program serving first generation, low income and/or disabled students. She also oversaw tutoring services, wrote grants and sat on multiple committees. She retired in 2010, having joined the staff in 1994.

President Docking expressed the sentiments of many on campus: “Jane will be remembered by all who knew her- as compassionate, smart and caring. No student who stepped into her office left without their question answered or need addressed.”

Born in Robesonia, Pa., in 1946 as Jane Koch Himmelberger, she graduated valedictorian from Conrad Weiser Area Schools and earned her bachelor’s degree from Kutztown University and her M.Ed. from Radford University. As her obituary noted, “she believed in serving students and providing opportunities for success particularly for disadvantaged students and for students with disabilities. As a former college athlete herself, she also had special interest in students who tried to balance academics and athletics. She always knew that she would return to her own roots: working with students who, like herself, are from first-generation, low–income backgrounds entering college with numerous possibilities and expectations, but little direction on how to navigate the college world.”

Her husband, Dennis, of 43 years recently stated, “She had three loves in her life: family, college students and Adrian College.”

Funeral services were held in her hometown of Robesonia on March 31, 2012. In a eulogy to her mom, daughter Erin McCloskey Maus read tributes to Jane posted on Facebook from students and former students.

An advocate for students in need, she was recognized as a Phenomenal Woman at Adrian College in 2002, and by the Alumni Association with the AC Stewardship Award in 2010. To honor Jane, her family and Adrian College have established the Jane McCloskey Memorial Scholarship Award to benefit first generation, low income, and disabled students who attend the college she loved. Donations can be sent to the Adrian College Development Office in the name of Adrian College/Jane McCloskey Memorial.
