RECEPTION HONORS PUBLISHED GRADUATE posted 11/16/06, updated 11/29/06
Event recognizes article in Quirk’s

ADRIAN, Mich. – A reception on Nov. 28 honored Melissa Murray, a Madison High School (Adrian, Mich.) graduate and recent Adrian College graduate who while a student was published in Quirk’s Marketing Research Review.

Honored guests and members of the media were invited.

Quirk’s is the pre-eminent publication for market researchers. As a college senior, Murray, who graduated last spring, wrote, “Make the Results Come Alive,” an article about the effective use of PowerPoint presentations. It was written and submitted during her senior year at Adrian as part of her departmental honors program requirements.

“Melissa is the only undergraduate to ever have an article published in Quirk’s,” said Pat Quinlan, Adrian marketing professor. “It is a testament to her ability, and to the strength of Adrian College’s business department.”

Joe Rydholm, editor of Quirk's, commented on the article.

“An oft-stated aim of the marketing research industry is to earn a ‘seat at the table’ with those who make large-scale corporate decisions. One of the best ways to do that is by repeatedly demonstrating the value of marketing research to internal clients,” he said. “Melissa’s article offers concrete, practical advice on developing effective presentations and I think it will help researchers inch closer to that seat at the table by showing them how to harness the power of PowerPoint to communicate research findings – and in doing so demonstrate their value – to corporate audiences.”

Jeff Walkowski, an independent market research consultant and co-author of “Qualitative Research Online” (2004), is an expert on online focus groups. Prior to the reception he made a presentation on this topic to any faculty who teach research skills.

Other guests at the reception included Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking, Adrian College Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs Dale Nesbary, members of the business department, and a variety of community members from Adrian and Toledo who have worked with Murray.

The event was the inaugural reception in the renovated President's Dining Room of the new Ritchie Marketplace.

Melissa Murray now works for Hart Associates, an advertising and marketing firm located in Toledo, Ohio. Melissa completed an internship there while in college, and accepted her current position while still a senior.

Adrian College has an excellent business department with a strong focus on experiential learning and internships. Recent Adrian graduates are up-and-coming business leaders at locations throughout the country.
