ADRIAN COLLEGE PROFESSOR RECEIVES SERVICE LEARNING AWARD posted 2/27/04

Dr. Agnes Caldwell, professor of sociology, criminal justice and human services at Adrian College, was honored with a Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning Award. This prestigious annual award is the highest MCC bestows on faculty and staff in the state of Michigan.

Caldwell has been designated by peers as the faculty member on campus who made the most outstanding contributions in the area of community service learning. The award recognizes the influence on or engagement of students to be involved in community service or service learning through modeling, instruction and/or special projects.

Since 2002, Caldwell has been working with Cambios, Inc., a Lenawee County organization dedicated to eliminating racism by providing educational programs and resources to the community. Students from Caldwell's Race and Ethnicity course are paired with Adrian Public School teachers to read books from Cambios and lead classroom discussions about racism. Caldwell is active in the MCC network and readily encourages her students to get involved.

Caldwell was formally honored on Feb. 5 at an awards reception at Grand Valley State University.

Michigan Campus Contact is a state-level non-profit organization that promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
