Dr. James Spence to present
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Institute for Ethics is presenting the first of two sessions which will focus focusing on “doing ethical reflection” by using a model that Adrian College has developed.
Dr. James Spence, assistant professor of philosophy/religion, will compare ethical theories in terms of their basic concepts, the information you need to consider in applying the theories, and the purpose or goal of these theories. This is the foundation of applied ethics -- ethics related to concrete, real-world problems in the disciplines and professions.
Faculty will find this important as a way to guide students through ethical reflection. (A blatant appeal to the ethics of duty or care)
Students will find this important as a "resume builder" which will help them standout against the "competition" in getting a job or getting into grad school. (A blatant appeal to the ethics of utility.)
Staff will find this important in terms of the ethical quandaries we face in interacting with the students and their parents. (Again, a blatant appeal to the ethics of utility.)
Community members are also invited to sit in on the discussion. The presentation will take place Thursday, Sept. 22 at noon in Knight Auditorium in Valade Hall. |
