ADRIAN,
Mich. – Adrian College is proud to announce
that the pictorial book, No Victory without
Work: A Pictorial History of Adrian College,
by Dr. Stephanie Jass, is now on sale at the
Arrington
Bookstore.
The book is in honor of the College’s
sesquicentennial and uses a wide variety of
photos and artifacts to illustrate the College's
rich history. Dr. Stephanie Jass, assistant
professor and chair of the history department
at Adrian College, provides a narrative of the
founding years of the College, a tour of the
changing campus, and an informative and humorous
account of the evolution of student life.
The book also includes essays and memoirs from
alumni which serve as a testament to both the
vitality and community spirit of Adrian College.
Jass believes that by gaining a better understanding
of the College’s history, it’ll
help make it easier to teach the students.
“We can say to our students, ‘here’s
what kids your age were doing in these seats
on this very campus 20, 50, 75 years ago,’”
said Jass. “They can think to themselves,
‘this is what my great-great grandmother
would have been doing 100 years ago.’”
By making this connection, history comes alive
and it’s easy to put one’s self
in that position. Jass says it also makes the
faculty, staff, alumni and current students
that much more proud of the College.
“This little school made big strides 150
years ago,” she said. “By visualizing
what this campus has gone through, it instills
a sense of pride for me and also for our students.
It makes us proud in being a Bulldog.”
The book’s title comes directly off the
shepherd’s crook that is passed down every
year at graduation. The Latin inscription “Palma
non sine labore” which translates into
“No victory without wok” was carved
into the crook 150 years ago.
The book is on sale now the Arrington Bookstore
which is located in the Caine Student Center
off of Williams St. The cost is $35.
