Adrian College Chaplain
Chris Momany leads campaign against human trafficking
ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian
College Chaplain Chris
Momany has been named as the state director
to lead the Michigan Not for Sale campaign against
human trafficking. He was appointed by noted
Christian ethicist, Dr. David Batstone.
Batstone, author of the 2007
book “Not for Sale: The Return of the
Global Slave Trade – and How We Can Fight
It” is the founder of the Not for Sale
campaign. A longtime advocate for social justice,
Batstone first became aware of slavery today
when one of his favorite restaurants ended up
on the front page for enslaving illegal immigrants.
He was shocked that this could happen right
under his nose. He is now an impassioned spokesperson
for the cause.
Human trafficking is a form
of contemporary slavery where people are bought
and sold and forced to work in dehumanizing
conditions. Approximately 70 percent of victims
are female and 50 percent are children. Many
are forced into the commercial sex trade, though
others are exploited in the various “hospitality”
and “service” industries. There
are about 27 million people held as slaves in
today’s world, and this illegal practice
exists in the United States, as well as Michigan.
Adrian College was founded
in 1859 as an antislavery institution of the
Wesleyan tradition. In keeping with the College’s
abolitionist tradition, the chaplain's office
and the office of multicultural programs have
stepped forward to organize on-campus awareness
of human trafficking. The chaplain's office
plans on hosting several events throughout the
school year for students, faculty, staff and
the Adrian community to get involved with the
Not
for Sale campaign. The campaign is one way
in which Adrian and its chaplaincy are bringing
awareness to this issue.
Adrian College will host a
national summit on anti-trafficking strategy
April 18 & 19, 2009. For more information
please contact the chaplain’s
office at 517-265-5161 ext. 4211.
