Adrian College Benefactors Create Three New Scholarships posted 6/17/10
Scholarships endowed by local Adrian residents
ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College is proud to announce three new scholarships recently endowed by local Adrian residents: the Chad R. Meyer Memorial Scholarship, the Frederick L. and Helen Kahle Southworth Memorial Scholarship, and the Charles H. and Glenna M. Tipton Scholarship.
When local business owner, Robert Price, was awarded an honorary degree at Adrian's Commencement on May 2, he was particularly moved by student and baseball player Chad Meyer whose goal was to receive his degree though his health was failing. Chad's father pushed him on stage in his wheelchair that afternoon to shake hands with President Jeffrey Docking as his classmates gave him a standing ovation.
Five days later, on May 7, Chad Meyer lost his hard-fought battle with cancer. Meyer was an inspiration to his teammates and coaches as he fought every day to beat the dreaded disease. As Robert Price witnessed these events, he vowed to honor Chad Meyer through a gift from his foundation to create a scholarship in Chad’s name.
The Frederick L. and Helen Kahle Southworth Memorial Scholarship came from the estate of Helen Southworth who passed away last year at the age of 91. She lived many years in Morenci and had retired as a vice president after a 45-year career with Bank of Lenawee.
Mrs. Southworth and her late husband, Fred, were particularly interested in education. She was also a member of the Croswell Opera House, the Lenawee County Historical Museum, the Lucy Wolcott Barnum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the American Colonists. The Southworth scholarship will benefit deserving students at the College who have financial need.
The Charles H. and Glenna M. Tipton Scholarship is named for the Tiptons who lived in Tipton and in Adrian. Charles died in 1978 and Glenna last December. Mrs. Tipton enjoyed a long career at Bank of Lenawee, retiring in 1986 as assistant vice president of mortgage closing loans. Through their estates, they endowed a scholarship for needy students attending Adrian College who reside in Lenawee County.
Adrian College is honored and humbled that these persons' generosity will help students receive an education. |
