Adrian College Celebrates 2009 Spring Commencement posted 5/12/09
Congratulations, graduates!

ADRIAN, Mich. - It was a proud day for Adrian College as the most recent group of graduates joined the ranks of alumni at spring commencement on Sunday, May 3, 2009 in the Multisport Performance Stadium. On a beautiful Michigan day, over 100 students received their diplomas.

Kurt L. Darrow, a 1977 graduate of the College and the President and Chief Executive Officer of La-Z-Boy Incorporated, gave this year’s commencement address. [Read Address Here] He began by saying that it was an honor and privilege to be speaking to this year’s graduating class.

“I was sitting in your seats some 32 years ago, and to think I would ever be back here addressing a graduating class was far from my imagination,” said Darrow.

He went on to highlight the three most important things in life which he said starts with the “three ‘Fs’- faith, family and friends.”

“Without those three elements as a foundation in your life, you may be extremely successful and overjoyed in your career, but it will not be as meaningful or satisfying to you without the balance your faith, family and friends provide to your life,” he said.

Darrow went on to offer some insight for the future as well as make some comical pitches for La-Z-Boy, joking that all of the graduates will one day want to have a “beautifully decorated home” with “furniture from La-Z-Boy.”

He ended his speech focusing on “what will matter” when everything comes to an end many years down the road.

“Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident, it’s not a matter of circumstance, but of choice,” he said. “So graduates, choose to live a life that matters.”

After his address, Darrow was presented with an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.

The College wishes to congratulate all of its 2009 spring graduates and wish them much success in the future.
