The Pathways to Excellence Award,
established by Larry and Diane Johnson of West Bloomfield,
Mich., illustrates how interconnected different aspects
of an education can be.
This new award will recognize one
of Adrian’s varsity athletic teams that has excelled
academically. The first award will be presented in the
fall of 2007.
As part of the award program, the
Johnson family also provided funding for Adrian College
students to showcase their artistic talents through
a contest to design the actual award. First, students
needed to complete a rendering of what their award would
look like and describe why it would best symbolize the
important connection that athletics and academics share.
A panel of judges chose the top five renderings and
then commissioned each artist to produce a final piece.
In April the artists presented their entries to the
panel.
Each artist did a wonderful job preparing
the final product and explaining the significance, design
and choice of materials of the entries. The five finalists
were (in alphabetical order): Robin Dluzen, Linette
Griteman, Ray Knox, Kay Murrell, and Laura VanCamp.
Each received a check for $250.
Robin Dluzen, a senior from Petersburg,
Mich., won the competition. Adrian College purchased
the award from Robin for $1,000. It will reside in the
Merillat Sport & Fitness Center and will be presented
each year to the winning team.
