Senior Art Exhibit at Adrian College

“Home/Grown”
on display now
“Home/Grown,”
an exhibition of works by Adrian College seniors,
Janel Dziesinski and Meghan Walton, is on view
in Adrian College’s Stubnitz Gallery through
May 2. A reception for the artists takes place
from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.
Dziesinski’s affinity
for hands-on sculpture and her dedication to
the issues of environmental justice and recycling
has led to an exhibition in which each piece
is created from reused items that would otherwise
end up in a landfill. More than one hundred
clear plastic water bottles hang from the ceiling,
to startlingly beautiful effect. Squares of
growing sod hold nests of papier-mâché
eggs, and life-size papier-mâché
seagulls peck at a landfill cutaway.
The core of Walton’s
ceramic work is using traditional forms to create
functional kitchen and bake ware. Each piece
is formed from porcelain on a potter’s
wheel. What sets her work apart from everyday
household items is her delicate, hand-painted,
inlayed, and incised surface decoration.
Walton is inspired by her strong interest in
baking, long another outlet for her personal
and artistic expression, and her exploration
of women’s roles in domesticity and family
intimacy.
The exhibition, the last of
three this spring, is a requirement toward the
completion of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
All gallery events are free
and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday
through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and
9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays. The Gallery
is closed on Sundays. Stubnitz Gallery is located
in Downs Hall on the college’s campus
at 110 S. Madison. More information may be obtained
