Art Department Offers Community Classes posted 4/14/08
Kiln intensive clay classes offered in May

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College Art and Design Department invites the community to take clay making classes on Saturdays and Sundays during the month of May. Class attendees will learn how to make, load, and fire their own work using a variety of kiln types.

Class will run from 9:30 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. in the ceramics studio located on the top floor of The Mahan Center for the Arts which is located off of Williams St. on the Adrian College campus. Participants will be able to mix-and-match sessions; the first one-week session is $60.00 and all others after that are $40.00 each including all materials.

The entire term will cover bisque, reduction, salt, wood firing, and midrange electric kiln firing. Jason Stockman, a BFA graduate of AC will be teaching this May term. Stockman is very adept at all kinds of kilns and firings, having built not only the salt and wood kilns on the College campus but also a number of kilns across the country. He has shown in numerous exhibitions and will be working on his MFA at Edinboro State University in PA beginning next fall.

Upper level ceramics students Linette Griteman, Eric Caulkins, and Lora Randolph will also be assisting during studio work times. With generous work times, the studio will be open from 8 A.M. – 11 P.M. every day of the week. Each session will begin on a weekend and end the following Sunday. Participants will glaze on Friday, load on Saturday, and fire on Sunday. Stockman will also do a number of demonstrations in addition to teaching about kilns and firing.

Any skill level is welcome; new students to the program will have a short orientation session the first class so they are aware of locations and instruction in basic slab, coil, and throwing techniques. Returning students will have individual goals with more advanced demonstrations and information provided. The class sessions for the term are listed below.

Reduction Firing: Saturday and Sunday April 26 & 27 through Saturday and Sunday May 3 & 4.

Salt Firing: Saturday and Sunday May 3 & 4 through Saturday and Sunday May 10 & 11.

Wood Firing: Saturday and Sunday May 10 & 11 through Saturday and Sunday May 17 & 18.
