Dr. Harry W. Speedy ’63, Doctor of Science

Statement from Arnold Palmer, former patient of Dr. Speedy:
“To me, Harry Speedy has represented all that anybody might ask of a doctor and a person. Not only was he a highly-skilled physician, but his warm, friendly personality and genuine concern always made his patients feel very comfortable in his care. I was one of those patients and was sorry to lose his services when he retired. I have been involved with our hospital’s board and foundation in Latrobe for many years and can tell you that Harry Speedy was certainly one of the most highly-respected members ever to be a part of our medical community.”

Harry Speedy had a long and respected career in the medical field, retiring after nearly 40 years. He specialized in internal medicine and gastroenterology, practicing in Pennsylvania with Diagnostic Associates, Inc., Latrobe Area Hospital Department of Medicine.

After medical school, Speedy served in the U.S. Army, Medical Corps, earning rank of major. During a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1969-70, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his meritorious service.

He has been a member of several professional societies and organizations such as the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians. Speedy served on the board of directors for the Twitty, Milsap, Sterban Foundation for Athletes and Entertainers, and has been involved with the Latrobe Presbyterian Church and the Latrobe Chamber of Commerce, in addition to numerous other civic and charitable organizations.

Harry graduated magna cum laude from Adrian College with a bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1967. He studied internal medicine at York Hospital in York, Pa., and gastrointestinal endoscopy at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Speedy helped endow the Spicer-Speedy Athletic Department Fund at Adrian College and is the 1987 recipient of the Adrian College Young Alumni Achievement Award. He played varsity golf for four years at Adrian College and is a member of the ATO fraternity.
