2007 COMMENCEMENT posted 5/1/07

Congratulations, graduates!

It was a proud day for Adrian College as the most recent group of graduates joined the ranks of alumni yesterday at spring commencement.

President Docking greets students and hands out diplomas.

Shelley Brown Milano, a 1978 graduate of the College and senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary for Eddie Bauer in Seattle, Wash., gave the commencement address.

Milano is a nationally recognized attorney and business leader in retail and manufacturing environments with close to 20 years experience leading corporate and legal departments. Prior to Eddie Bauer, she worked for Starbucks and Honda of America.

The title of her address is “Success in Today’s World.” It emphasized the importance of treating people right.

Honorary degrees were awarded to Milano and to Dr. Harry W. Speedy, a 1963 graduate of the

College and a retired doctor from Pennsylvania. Speedy was the personal physician of golfer Arnold Palmer.

Following the conferral of degrees, the College held its Cane Ceremony, an Adrian College tradition dating back to 1875. During the ceremony, the graduating class presents the College's beloved Shepherd's Crook to the undergraduates as a symbol of achievement and a transfer of responsibility. Before passing the crook, the president of the graduating class attaches a ribbon bearing the name of each class member.

Adrian College, located in southeast Michigan, is a private residential college established in 1859 that is related to The United Methodist Church. It is currently experiencing tremendous growth.
