Adrian College Presents Second Annual Women's Diversity Conference posted 3/4/10
“Unity in Diversity: Transforming our Communities” takes place on March 27
ADRIAN, Mich. - Adrian College celebrates Women's History Month with the second annual Women's Diversity Conference on Saturday, March 27, 2010, on the Adrian College campus. The one-day conference entitled “Unity in Diversity: Transforming our Communities” includes panel discussions and presentations on diverse women’s issues, experiences, and communities.
The conference is designed to bring together women of diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds to celebrate women as contributing and vital members of our community.
The event runs from 8:30am-5pm in Ritchie Marketplace and is co-sponsored by women’s studies and multicultural programs at Adrian College as well as the office of academic affairs.
The conference goals are to dialogue about the meaning of “community” and develop, through conversations, community connections that recognize, respect and learn from the experiences of all women. Conference sessions include the following themes: education access; art/image/empowerment; community and professional obstacles; global/local; resolutions/resources.
The keynote address will be given by Lolita Hernandez. Hernandez writes poetry and fiction which draw from her Trinidad and St. Vincent heritage, and are driven by her experience as a UAW worker. She was in the profession for 33 years, 21 of them at the Cadillac Plant in Detroit.
She is the author of “Autopsy of an Engine and Other Stories From the Cadillac Plant” which won a 2005 PEN Beyond Margins Award. She is also the author of two collections of poems: “Quiet Battles” and “Snakecrossing.” Her work appears in many literary publications, and she reads from her works in the Detroit area and nationally.
The cost of registration is $5 and one non-perishable food item. Lunch will be provided. To register, please read the registration information packet and complete the registration form.
