New Athletic Training Program Announced posted 2/19/08
Adrian College actively pursuing national accreditation.

ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College announces its new Athletic Training program and applications are currently being accepted for prospective students.

Sophomore Katelyn Tuck sits on an athletic training table as freshman Ryan Krichiver practices an athletic treatment technique. Director of Athletic Training Education Tina Claiborne looks on.

The new curriculum, which was launched in the fall 2007 semester, is a great addition to the College’s liberal arts education. The program is included in the department of Exercise Science and Physical Education.

Certified athletic trainers are allied health care professionals who specialize in the prevention, recognition, management and rehabilitation of injuries that result from physical activity. In order to become a certified athletic trainer, students must receive a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited athletic training curriculum and pass the National Board of Certification exam.

With outstanding support from Adrian College’s administration, the athletic training curriculum in the department of Exercise Science and Physical Education is actively pursuing national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

In the new athletic training program, students will gain valuable experience both inside and outside the classroom. Immediately students will spend time with both on campus and off campus certified Athletic Trainers. As freshmen, they will begin to learn how to evaluate and treat athletic injuries and practice these skills in a practical lab setting. Beginning their sophomore year students will work with athletic teams at both the collegiate and high school levels, as well as rehabilitation clinics.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to work alongside sports medicine physicians and to observe orthopedic surgery, participate in research, and attend professional conferences. By the end of four years at Adrian, athletic training students will have completed five semesters of clinical rotations, along with coursework in orthopedic assessment, general medical conditions, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, and more.

To spearhead the accreditation movement, Tina Claiborne, PhD, ATC, CSCS was added to Adrian’s team. She comes to the College with over 12 years of clinical and teaching experience. Following the completion of her Master’s degree in clinical kinesiology and Doctorate in biomechanics, Dr. Claiborne directed the athletic training program at the University of Southern Maine, where she was successful in the re-accreditation of her program. With these credentials Adrian College is confident that they will be successful in their initial accreditation efforts.

Soon an athletic training website will be constructed so students can check out the curriculum, see what students are up to, and to see where AC alumni are working in the field. Check the website for updates. Further information can also be obtained by contacting Tina Claiborne via e-mail at tclaiborne@adrian.edu or at 517-265-5161 ext. 4432.
