Art & Design Department Offers Spring Art Classes for Youth posted 1/7/10

ADRIAN, Mich. - The next session of the Youth Art Program, offered by the Adrian College Art and Design Department , will begin Saturday, January 23, and continue through February 27.  Two classes will be offered--one for ages 5 through 9 and one for youth 10 and up.  Both meet 9:30 a,m. to noon in the Mahan Center for Art and Interior Design on Adrian College’s campus.  This session’s theme is POP! Culture.

Younger students will study artist Keith Haring and help paint a mural in his style.  After studying Andy Warhol, they will learn to make a silkscreen print.  Older students will meet a graphic novelist, develop their own characters, and work in the college Mac Lab.  They will study Andy Warhol and silkscreening as well as artist Faith Ringgold.  They will make a story quilt inspired by hers.  Both classes will participate in an exhibition at the end of the session.

The program will be taught by experienced art teachers Natalie Benko and Debra Irvine-Stiver, who also directs the program.  Adrian College art education students will assist.  The program’s cost is $70.00 and includes all supplies.  Scholarships are available for students who qualify for the free lunch program, courtesy of the college Art and Design Department.
