TO SPEAK AT CONVOCATION
posted 1/29/07
ADRIAN,
Mich. — Judy Richardson will speak on Feb. 7 at
12:15 in Dawson Auditorium, as part of the Convocation
speaker series.
Judy Richardson is a film producer
and activist. She was a staff member of the Student
Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in the early
1960's. She worked on SNCC projects throughout the South,
first in SNCC's national office in Atlanta, and then
in Mississippi, Alabama and southwest Georgia.
Richardson has an important message
about the history and values of the Civil Rights Movement
and their relevance to the struggles of today. She describes
the hardships faced by people who were willing to risk
job and home and even life to win the “prize”
of justice, self-respect and fair treatment. Her telling
of the past supports the continuing struggle for racial
equality and harmony.
Ms. Richardson lectures nationally
about the civil rights movement and her films. She has
appeared on "Nightline" (ABC-TV), "Nightwatch"
(CBS-TV), and various other news shows in opposition
to the image of the African American community and the
civil rights movement portrayed in the film “Mississippi
Burning.”
Richardson’s speech is described
as an absolute must for a contemporary understanding
of racism in America.
Convocation is free and open
to the public. Dawson Auditorium is located off Charles
Street.
