Art And Design Department Offers Winter Classes To Community posted 12/2/08
Classes offered to both youth and adults

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College art and design department will offer two community programs this winter; one for students in grades K-9 and one for high school students and adults.

The Adrian College Youth Art Department will break down the youth classes by age; one for students ages K-4th grade and the second for grades 5-9. The classes will take place on Saturdays from Jan 17-Feb 21, 2009, 9:30 A.M.-noon.

The theme of these youth classes is “Earth and Outer Space”. Both will study a variety of mediums including glass, stone, clay, and paint inspired by the stars, earth, and its materials. Classes will be held on the Adrian College campus in the art department located in Mahan Hall.

The program will be taught by experienced art teachers; Debra Irvine-Stiver, Andrea Miller, and Annie Morton Howard, assisted by Adrian College art education students. The cost is $70.00 which includes all supplies. Scholarships are available for students who qualify for the free lunch program due to the generosity of Wacker Chemical Corporation.

The second community program being offered this winter is for students in high school and adults, of all skill levels. This class will experience ceramics in Adrian College’s well equipped ceramics studio on Saturdays from Jan 17 thru Feb 21, 9:30 A.M. - noon. The class will cover “Non-Traditional Surfaces” where common materials such as Miracle Grow, Comet, oatmeal, and many other everyday materials are used as glazes. Firing techniques you can easily do in your backyard such as pit firing and raku will be covered.

Students will learn a number of forming techniques including both wheel and hand built forms. Generous time outside class is also provided. The class will be taught by Pi Benio, Adrian College Professor as well as Adrian College ceramics graduates Kevin Kwaitowski and Laura Van Camp. Half scholarships are available for high school students. The class cost for tuition, clay, and studio time is $160.00

Registration for both programs can be done in person or by mail through the Adrian College Office of Conferences, 110 S. Madison St. Adrian, MI 49221. Please make checks payable to Adrian College Art and Design Department. Registration fees are non-refundable.
