Social Work Club Presents 'The Living Library'
posted 11/20/09

Club hopes to combat prejudice and stereotyping

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College Social Work Club is presenting The Living Library, an event designed to combat prejudice and the use of stereotyping, on Thursday, Dec. 3 from 4-9 P.M. in Valade classrooms.

Rather than students reading about a population that is frequently stereotyped, a member of that group acts as a resource (a book) that the event participant can interview (check out) for a fifteen minute block of time. The objective is to present to the participant a person, rather than a stereotype, and create an opportunity to challenge previously-held assumptions.

The Living Library is free and open to all students and members of the Adrian College Community as well as the public. Food and refreshments will be provided and participants can come at any point in the five hour span. All readers will be given library cards that can be used as proof of attendance if professors would be willing to give extra credit points for attendance.

Any volunteers that would be willing to help for part or all of the time are welcome to contact Courtney Burrow at 517-401-0722 or via e-mail at cburrow@adrian.edu .

Valade Hall is located on the College campus at the corner of Williams St. and Madison St.
