Adrian College students volunteer at Boys & Girls Club
ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College students who are members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority have been mentoring youth for the past seven weeks at the Boys & Girls Club of Lenawee.
Ten men from Sigma Alpha Epsilon and ten ladies from Alpha Phi were individually matched with ten boys and girls who participate in the Boys & Girls Club. Members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon met Tuesday evenings while the ladies of Alpha Phi met Wednesday evenings. They participated in activities ranging from dodgeball to learning how to play the African drums and challenging each other in Battlestack, a game of cup-stacking.
Sophomore Jackie Gatchell, one of the Alpha Phi members who volunteers with the children, enjoys spending time there and finds it rewarding.
“Volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club encourages Adrian College students like me to explore what is beyond campus while giving us a chance to give back to the community,” said Gatchell.
The Boys and Girls Club is equally thrilled with the time the Adrian College students devoted to be a child’s “buddy.”
“I am grateful for the students from both Sigma Alpha Epsilon & Alpha Phi,” said Sadie Carrico, mentoring program director at the Boys and Girls Club. “They showed commitment in coming to meet with their Little Buddy every week, and they did a great job connecting with the kids from the Boys & Girls Club. I hope they continue with Club-Based Mentoring for our next seven-week session beginning January 5th.”
