Honors Colloquium Travels to Chicago posted 10/09/10
Class explores the reality of a city

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College Honors Colloquium will be travelling to Chicago the weekend of Oct. 16-18. Seventeen students will be studying during this weekend inversion program through the College’s affiliation with the Chicago Center.

Students in the honors program are required take a colloquium that is a thematically based seminar. The College offers a traditional book-based course but this colloquium offers an experimental opportunity for students to go and study in Chicago for a weekend.

Students are currently reading “Never a City So Real.” The course uses the book and the Chicago experience to answer questions such as: how is everyday life lived for people in a major metropolitan area?  What is community?  What are assumptions about life in Chicago?

While in Chicago, students will explore the construction of subjective and non-subjective reality by analyzing the neighborhood tours, ethnic restaurants, and an off Broadway play with the biographies of everyday Chicagoans.

Dr. Agnes Caldwell, interim vice president and dean of academic affairs and associate professor of sociology, and Elizabeth Major, assistant professor of music and native Chicagoan, will be leading the tour.

Future opportunities like this colloquium are planned for the spring 2010 semester. All interested students should contact their advisors or the registrar’s office for more information.
