AC Offers New Study Abroad
Program posted 10/15/08
Students now
have opportunity to study in York, England
ADRIAN, Mich. – The
Adrian College Office of Study Abroad is excited
to announce a new program “Fortification
to Reformation: The History of York to the 15th
Century” in York, England. This 5-week
intensive interdisciplinary program is from
June 13 to July 18, 2009.
Through this unique partnership
with York Minster (Cathedral), students will
live within the medieval walled city of York
and study the history and fabric of its various
invasions and settlements, from the Romans and
Anglo-Saxons to the Vikings and Normans to the
Reformation and beyond.
Located in the north of England,
York boasts a remarkably well-preserved collection
of medieval sites, including the largest medieval
cathedral in Northern Europe, which has been
a place of worship for over 1,300 years. The
buildings of York, coupled with the vibrant
artisan workshops that endeavor to maintain
them, provide a perfect location for the study
of the Middle Ages.
Lectures focus on the lives
and livelihoods of the nobility, the clergy,
and the commoners during the city’s major
historical periods. In addition to readings
and lectures, the course includes individual
student research projects using exclusive access
to the archives and library of the Minster.
Because it is a summer course,
students can have these important experiences
without stepping out of their major tracks.
It's in English, so no extra language expertise
is required. The course includes six credits
at the 300-level, service learning experience,
research opportunities at the Minster's archives
and library, and excursions to various historical
sites.
For AC students who are interested,
applications are due January 15, 2009. More
information can be obtained by contacting Dr.
Robin Bott, director of study abroad, at 517-265-5161
ext. 4080 or via e-mail, rbott@adrian.edu.
