David Westbrook to Speak at Convocation posted 10/14/08
Professor will discuss ‘An Intellectual Possibility in a Time of Boredom, Terror and Confusion’ at Adrian College

ADRIAN, Mich. - Adrian College welcomes David Westbrook to speak at the Dr. James Borland Convocation Series on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 12:00 P.M. in the College Chapel.

Westbrook teaches on business and international topics, including the basic courses in corporations and international law. Whether practical, political, or theoretical in intention, Westbrook's scholarship is grounded by his considerable experience in both European and American governments, private legal practices, and academies.

He is the author of several critically acclaimed books and his new books “Navigators of the Contemporary” and “Deploying Ourselves” are forthcoming. He has also published widely on the Global War on Terror, and current geopolitics.

John Eipper, chair of the department of modern languages and cultures at Adrian College is a friend of Westbrook and is encouraging everyone to attend.

“He is a challenging and thought-provoking writer and one of those rare animals in today's culture of specialization - a public intellectual,” said Eipper. “His 2004 book ‘City of Gold’ is a brilliant analysis of the global culture that has emerged in our era of multinational capitalism.”

Eipper believes that his talk will be quite interesting and very beneficial to the students.

“I am confident that David’s talk, ‘An Intellectual Possibility in a Time of Boredom, Terror and Confusion’ will be of interest to students in the fields of business, sociology, political science, history, literary studies, and international relations,” said Eipper.

Professor Westbrook is the Floyd H. & Hilda L. Hurst Faculty Scholar & Professor at the University of Buffalo and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University and a Juris Doctorate degree from Harvard University.

This event is free and open to the public. The Adrian College chapel is located on the College campus off of Charles St. For more information, please contact the Office of Academic Affairs by phone at 517-265-5161 ext. 4466 or via e-mail at cvalentine@adrian.edu
