Health Professions
Advising Service (HPAS)
Students planning to attend professional or graduate school in the life sciences or health professions have many sources of information at Adrian College.
If it is clear you are planning a career as a health care professional, administrator, or researcher, you should meet with Marcia J. Boynton, who directs the Adrian College Institute for Health Studies (AC/IHS). Ms. Boynton is the primary Health Professions Advisor at Adrian College, and is available to meet with you by appointment. Be sure to monitor announcements throughout the year for workshops, speakers and other special events.
Even if she is not your advisor, you may wish to seek the advice of Dr. Janet Salzwedel in Adrian’s Biology Department. Dr. Salzwedel has counseled pre-health science students for many years. Both Ms. Boynton and Dr. Salzwedel are happy to answer initial questions by email.
Your Academic Advisor, usually in your major department, is an excellent source of information on varied career alternatives utilizing your bachelors degree; and can offer important advice regarding applications for graduate school.
Please become a Facebook Fan of the Adrian College Institute for Health Studies. Many announcements and links to news of interest to future health professionals are posted here. Prospective students are welcome to monitor the Institute on Facebook.
Once enrolled, we encourage students to register as an associate of the Institute for Health Studies. Complete this form on line or pick up a blue “Joint Registration Form” outside 204 Peelle Hall. The main purpose of registering is to facilitate your addition to email groups organized around your particular interest area/s, veterinary medicine, dentistry, public health, etc. Completing this form will also enroll you in the Pre-Health Professions Society. This student organization provides information, site visits and program activities of interest to students with varied career interests in the health professions and life sciences.
As an Adrian student, you have two major alternatives in researching health careers. At the Institute for Health Studies (204 Peelle Hall) you will find a Resource Room and conference space where you can browse through publications which may help you focus your thinking. You will also find a set of three ring binders, organized by profession, which provide key information, including job duties, salary, preparation required, lists of training programs/professional schools and more. In the hall way outside the Resource Room are racks of information sheets from which you can select subjects of interest to you.
If you prefer access to career data 24/7, much of the same information is available on Black Board through the Health Professions Virtual Advisor (HPVA). Every Adrian College student is automatically “enrolled in the course” housing HPVA data, so you sign in using your usual name and password. Materials at this location are freely down loadable, and there are many important web links to podcasts, videos and data sources which are constantly updated by their originators in the health professions.
The Adrian College Office of Career Planning can assist you in investigating career alternatives outside the health care industry, and offers free access to career selection software. Internship plans are coordinated through this office.
It’s our goal to provide you with comprehensive career and professional preparation in the health and life sciences. Please let us know how we can be of service. |
