Field Methods Trip

Virginia &West Virginia

Fall, 1998

On top of Old Rag Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, VA. From left to right: Tom Clark, Jacob Haynes, Dr. Forest (Rock) Haines, Stephanie Lozon and Chris Kelbert.

Day 1. We left about 9:00 pm and drove for most of the night....
Day 2. Finally, we stopped driving. And wondered if it was still Day 1. And where we could find coffee.....
After driving all night and only one hour of sleep, we proceeded to Cheat River Canyon to measure a section. Unfortunately, it was snowing heavily so we moved on. This photo was taken on the way home when the weather had obviously drastically improved.
After our first unsuccessful attempt we set out to measure a Mississippian section along the roadcut near Bowden, WVa. Mostly, we got wet!

Day 3. The weather finally cleared up!
We actually measured this section.
Notice the three tiny spots at the top that don't quite look like trees? Just in case you can't make out their faces, they are Chris Kelbert, Stephanie Lozon and Jake Haynes.
Germany Valley Overlook.

Day 4. The big hike up Old Rag Mountain.
Same photo of Old Rag Mountain; different photographer. Dr. Sarah Hanson is now in the foreground & Rock is the photographer.
The aftermath of the Old Rag hike. Jake Haynes (front), Tom Clark and Stephanie Lozon (asleep behind Tommy).

Day 5. We headed home.
Fun stop at Gettysburg, PA on the way home. From left to right: Nicole Borom, Dr. Forest Haines, Stephanie Lozon, Jake Haynes, Tom Clark, Terry Tackett, Chris Kelbert
