Doug was an Earth Science Teacher Education major at Adrian College. In 2003, he received a Cranson Award from Michigan Earth Science Teachers Association.that allowed him to travel to the southwestern US to take photographs and collect rock and mineral samples for use in the clasroom. He spent nearly a week at Bonito Campground, just across the road from Sunset Crater Volcano NM. Working with Dr. Hanson in her research area, he learned firsthand about volcanos . He went from there to numerous parks in the southwest where he gained valuable experiences and rock samples that he was able to take back to the classroom where he teaches high school science. Below are a few photo's of a few of the places Doug visited. |

| No geology trip to the southwestern US is complete without a visit to the Grand Canyon to see the spectular exposures representing the Precambian to the Permian. | ||

To the right is Lava River Cave, a lava tube that
formed when lava flowing below a solid crust ceased to flow and left
a "tunnel" behind. This lava tube is just northwest of Flagstaff,
AZ.
