Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008 Students sell Valentine’s Day gifts
By Kimmy Young The week leading up to Valentine’s Day was full of organizations trying to sell students all sorts of goodies. Sigma Tau Delta (STD), the English Honorary Society, sold poems to raise money for its senior cords and other events it coordinates. “We do poetry because our goal is to promote reading and writing,” said senior Corinne Kellogg, STD president. Students could choose between classical poetry for $1 and original poems, written by STD members, for $2. STD raised a total of $37. The poems were sent to student mailboxes today. Other groups sold items to raise money for philanthropy. Members of Alpha Phi (AP) sold cans of Crush soda during lunch and dinner this week. “It’s a good little fundraiser that we can do,” said junior Katie Gatchell, AP president. “People can get into the holiday.” Crush cans were sold for $1, and the recipient could pay $1 to know who sent the Crush. If students wanted the gift to remain anonymous, they could pay $3. The money raised from the sales goes toward the Alpha Phi foundation for cardiac care for women. Last year, it raised $43. Cans were passed out last night with a return of $55. “It works really well with Cardiac Care month being in February and doing the Crush cans that way,” said sophomore Terra Campbell, vice president of marketing for AP. Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA) sold handmade jewelry to raise money for the Special Olympics. The sale ends at 6 in the Caine Student Center tonight. “It’s 100 percent original,” said freshman Rachael Williams, fundraising chair for ASA. “If you buy it for your girlfriend, no guy can buy the same piece.” Prices for the jewelry, which consisted of earrings to necklace charms, starts at $5. The goal is “$100 at the rate we’re going,” Williams said. The sorority may also try the fundraiser for Christmas, Williams said. |
