Upper Penninsula,
Michigan
This trip was taken in October of
1999 for the mineralogy class. We
toured many sites in the Upper Peninsula
including several mine
dumps where we found minerals such
as native copper, hematite, pyrite,
chalcopyrite, and specular hematite.
We also toured an abandoned
mineshaft from the 1800's. Click
on the pictures to see a larger version.

These pictures were taken as
we stopped along Lake Michigan shortly after we entered the Upper Peninsula.

This is a picture of a formation
known as BIF or Banded Iron Formation. It consists of jasper and hematite.
Most of it is mined but luckily this area was not. It is known as Jasper
Knob. You will find this near Ishpeming, Michigan. It was formed between
1.7-2.5 billion years ago. This would place it nearly half of the age
of the earth! Photo by Dr. Sarah Hanson 2000
