The Ridge Project
The renovation of Ridge Gymnasium into a
dynamic new student center started in May 2003 and was completed
(read
more) in the summer of 2004.
There are plans to dedicate the building
during the President's Dinner in October.
No other building on campus has such a storied
history. Not many halls can brag about hosting a circus, for
instance. In its heyday, Ridge was home to successful Bulldog
basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams that were the talk
of the MIAA. But that’s not all. Talented performers
graced the stage. Commencement was held there. Out of the
ordinary events — like professional wrestling and boxing
matches — have held court there. Eleanor Roosevelt even
visited once to give a speech for the United Way. In the last
decade, it’s been a temporary library and a makeshift
student center.
The building houses a 24-hour computer lab,
student mailboxes, art studios, programming and meeting space,
a game room, a TV lounge and food service space. Ridge also
houses the offices of student government and several other
student organizations.
Construction costs were approximately $4.7
million. Much of that has been raised, thanks to the generous
support of donors. The College still aims to raise the remainder,
and to create an endowment for the building. There are still
opportunities to contribute.

FAMILY CHALLENGE TO ALUMNI - $1 MILLION!
The Arrington brothers have made a
generous commitment to Ridge Student Center. Their $1
million pledge challenges all other alumni to do their
part by supporting this project with a total of at least
$1 million by June 30, 2005. As of October 5, 2004,
the total for all other alumni donors was just over
$770,000—well on the way to this important goal.
“It is with great pleasure
and excitement that we have decided to assist this effort…an
excellent opportunity to transform this remarkable historic
building into a versatile student center…Ridge
holds many memories for all of us…and this worthwhile
project represents the College’s current efforts
to expand and enhance the environment for Adrian’s
student population.”
