Senator Carl Levin Speaks at Adrian College's
Fall Convocation
September

Senator
Carl Levin (D-MI) spoke at Adrian College’s
opening Convocation ceremony on Sunday, September
9 at 2pm in the Adrian College Chapel. Levin
was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 28, 1934.
He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1956
and from Harvard Law School in 1959. After earning
his law degree, he was admitted to the Michigan
bar and began a practice in Detroit. Carl Levin
played many roles in the Michigan government
before being elected as a United States Senator
in 1979. He was state assistant attorney general
and general counsel for the Michigan civil rights
commission from 1964 to 1967. He was also special
assistant attorney general for the State of
Michigan and chief appellate defender for the
city of Detroit from 1968 to 1969. Levin was
also an active member of the Detroit City Council
from 1969 to 1977, being council president the
last four years. Since 1978, Senator Levin was
reelected in 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002. He
is currently the chairman of the Senate Armed
Services Committee. Levin has been known for
participating in the Whistleblower Protection
Act, the Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights, and
the Ethics Reform Act in 1989. Senator Carl
Levin is the longest serving US Senator ever
to represent Michigan. He is best known as a
strong supporter of our national defense. Adrian
Daily Telegram said it best, stating Senator
Levin as an “effective, determined leader.”

Presentation and Debate between Amanda Peterman
and John Keserich April 11, 2007
On April 11, 2007 Amanda Peterman,
Life Media Project Coordinator of Right to Life
Michigan, and John Keserich, Public Advocacy
Coordinator of Planned Parenthood Mid-
Michigan Alliance spoke at Adrian College. Both
speakers gave a 20 minute presentation. Following
their presentations there was a question and
answer session that took the form of a debate.
For this, each speaker had three Adrian College
student representatives. This was to be strictly
educational and informative, and was handled
in a controlled and unbiased fashion. The event
was open to the public and everyone, regardless
of opinion was encouraged to attend. It took
place in Dawson Auditorium.The event began at
6:45pm and was put on by Adrian College Students

Presidential Candidate Debate
March 12, 2007
The Adrian College Policy Institute, the Communications
Honor Society and WVAC-FM hosted the Student
Government Association debate on March 12. The
debate featured the three candidates that are
running for Student Body President, Matt Kennedy
(Jr), Matt Johnson (Jr) and Adam Stone (So).
A large group of students filed into Mahan to
hear the candidates’ platforms while a
panel comprised of Josh Guitar (President, Adrian
College Students for Life), Savannah Lee (President,
Theta Alpha Phi) and Nicole Willson (President,
Communications Honor Society) asked the students
questions. The questions ranged from what they
want to achieve as President to what problems
there have been with the Student Government
Association in the past. The panel and questions
were put together by Dr. Bleam and her Communications
students. The debate was recorded by the Adrian

Model Arab League
Grand Valley State University
Dr. Philip Howe, Dr. Sheri Bleam, Freshman Shelley
Sargent, Peter Bleam and Elizabeth Richardson
observed the 2007 Model Arab League at Grand
Valley State University over Spring Break. Drs.
Howe and Bleam are building a class around annual
participation in the Michigan MAL beginning
