Mission: Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination in 1845. The College was chartered as a degree-granting institution in 1859. The College is affiliated with The United Methodist Church. Adrian College is a challenging, caring educational community where students from diverse backgrounds prepare for active, successful and responsible lives.
Teacher Preparation Programs: Adrian College offers baccalaureate programs leading to state teacher certification. Students may seek certification 1) in the elementary grades or in the elementary grades plus grades 6-8 in majors(s) and/or minor(s), 2) in two or more of 24 fields in secondary schools, or 3) both elementary and secondary schools in art; music; health, physical education and recreation; and Spanish. Bilingual certification in Spanish is available at either the elementary or the secondary level.
Student Characteristics: Enrollment during the fall of 2004 was 1013 students. Most students are of traditional undergraduate age. 95% attend Adrian full-time, and 80% are Michigan residents. 8% of the full-time students are minority students. Of the full-time students, 75% live in on-campus housing. The average ACT score for fall 2003 freshmen was 21 and the average high school G.P.A. was 3.09.
Admission Requirements:
Admission to Teacher Education: Students must pass the Basic Skills test of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification and must be recommended by the College's Student Affairs Office. Students must be recommended by and retain the approval of the academic department in which they are majoring. Students must have an overall grade point average of 2.70 or greater, grade point averages of 2.50 or greater in al majors or minors, and a grade point average of 2.70 or greater in all teacher education course work.
Admission to Student Teaching: All candidates must complete a minimum of 300 hours of approved field experience prior to the commencement of their associate teaching. At least 200 of these hours must be at the level of certification being sought; of the 200, at least 150 must be in the formal school setting . Candidates must also have a positive recommendation from the advisory teacher in the field experience.

The vision of the teacher education program is to instill this mission in the minds of our students and to encourage them to pass on a similar vision to their students.
Best Practices: The program required of all teacher education students reflects the best research and requires those students to implement that research in a supervised setting.
