Spanish
Courses
Imagine
yourself snacking on antojitos or tapas in a
cafe in Mexico or Spain. Imagine yourself spending
a semester living with a Mexican family - completely
immersed in their language and culture. Imagine
using your ability to speak Spanish to interact
with the world's 430 million Spanish speakers.
Adrian's communication-focused Spanish curriculum
prepares you to participate in one of a number
of study abroad programs in locations like Cuernavaca
or Merida, Mexico or Granada or Salamanca, Spain.
If you study Spanish at AC
you won't be taught "from the book"
but from the experiences of dynamic and culturally
engaged professors like John
Eipper and Don
Cellini. Because of Professor Eipper's
research in Latin American culture and literature,
students in his Hispanic Literatures and Cultures
course benefit from his first-hand experiences
in Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. His background
as a translator in the legal and technical fields
provides real-life examples for students who
are considering careers using their language
skills. Professor Don Cellini's background is
in language education and acquisition. Whether
you are fulfilling the College's language requirement
or pursuing advanced language study, Professor
Cellini knows the teaching and learning strategies
that will improve your speaking, listening,
reading, and writing abilities.
You'll
also have plenty of opportunities outside the
classroom. Each year the Modern Languages and
Cultures department sponsors World Languages
Week, a celebration of the languages and cultural
diversity that comprise today's interconnected
world. You'll choose from activities like round-table
discussions of careers for language students,
"No English Allowed" lunch tables,
or guest presentations by business, cultural,
and federal law enforcement professionals. You'll
benefit from the city of Adrian's extensive
Spanish-speaking community as a resource for
research projects or service learning. You might
even find yourself on a field trip to Detroit
to enjoy El Dia de los Muertos cultural activities.
