Undgergraduate Program - Athletic Training
Curriculum

Athletic Trainers (ATs) are allied health care professionals who specialize in the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. ATs also have knowledge in the areas of sport performance enhancement, sport nutrition, and sport psychology. In order to become an AT, students must first graduate from a CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) accredited program, and then achieve success on the national Board of Certification (BOC) exam.

The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at Adrian College is rapidly changing and growing. Tina Claiborne, PhD, ATC, CSCS was hired in the fall of 2007 to take Adrian’s ATEP through the process of initial accreditation. She was previously the program director at the University of Southern Maine, where she was successful in leading her program through re-accreditation. With that experience, Adrian College is confident that Dr. Claiborne understands the necessary requirements to repeat accreditation success here!

This program is Accreditated by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.

The Athletic Training Education bachelor's degree program at Adrian College received initial accreditation in December, 2010. The site visitors were here for a three day comprehensive evaluation. They interviewed athletic training students, clinical instructors, faculty, staff, administration, and library personnel. Additionally, the site visitors toured on campus classrooms and labs, as well as off campus clinical education sites.
Throughout the three days, the site visitors carefully evaluated the athletic training curriculum for content and rigor.

Dr. Tina Claiborne, Director of the Athletic Training Education Program was excited that, "the official CAATE report noted numerous programmatic strengths including outstanding faculty, facilities and clinical educators. Most notably, the site visitors reported that the program met EVERY standard necessary for national accreditation."

The site visit report stated the Athletic Training Education Program exposes the athletic training students to a variety of well qualified faculty in related disciplines. The Program Director is an experienced educator and outstanding advocate for the program, many of the athletic training students cited the PD as a key reason for their selection of Adrian College as their college of choice and athletic training as their preferred major.  Additionally, the private school experience, for example, small classes and individual attention, are additional strengths that attract students.

The athletic training faculty bring a diverse background and excellent work ethic to the program. The ATEP faculty have a good working relationship with the staff athletic trainers. The Athletic Training Education Program utilizes numerous affiliated clinical education sites in the surrounding communities. The Approved Clinical Instructors on campus and at the affiliated sites are enthusiastic about the program and are very engaged in the clinical education of the athletic training students.

On campus, the growth of the intercollegiate athletics program and construction of new athletic facilities provide additional clinical education opportunities for the athletic training students. The Athletic Training Laboratory and the Human Performance Laboratory are well equipped and demonstrate the College's commitment to athletic training education. The program's policies that permit athletic training students to participate in intercollegiate athletics provides an important recruiting advantage for the ATEP. An added benefit to students is the opportunity to earn credit while attending professional conferences or performing service learning.

Dr. Claiborne would like to especially thank all faculty, staff, administration, clinical educators, students and community members that contributed to this great success.
