Athletic Training

Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are allied health care professionals who specialize in the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. ATCs also have knowledge in the areas of sport performance enhancement, sport nutrition, and sport psychology. In order to become an ATC, students must first graduate from a CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) accredited program, and then achieve success on the national Board of Certification (BOC) exam.

The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at Adrian College is rapidly changing and growing. Tina Claiborne, PhD, ATC, CSCS was hired in the fall of 2007 to take Adrian’s ATEP through the process of initial accreditation. She was previously the program director at the University of Southern Maine, where she was successful in leading her program through re-accreditation. With that experience, Adrian College is confident that Dr. Claiborne understands the necessary requirements to repeat accreditation success here!

ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM ACCREDITATION STATUS
The Adrian College Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP)  has been preparing for accreditation since 2007, and I will submit the program self study to the Commission on Accreditation for Athletic Training Education (CAATE) in June, 2010.  This will set the program up for a CAATE site visit sometime during the 2010/2011 academic year.  Once the self study is submitted, it takes approximately one year before we will hear a final decision.  Therefore, we will know our accreditation status during the summer of 2011.

What does this mean for Athletic Training Students?  As long as we are accredited by 2011, any student who was admitted to Adrian in the fall of 2007 or later will be eligable to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) exam.

Academic accreditation is a long and involved process, and we are excited to be at such an advanced stage in only 3 years!  While we do not know what the Commission's final decision will be, our program faculty are extremely vigilant, conscientious, and dedicated to the success of our students.

ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT
