Athletic Training Health Requirements

Because athletic training is an allied health profession, there are certain health requirements that Athletic Training Students (ATS) must meet in order to work with athletes.  These requirements are established to keep both the student and the athletes they are treating safe.

1. Prior to beginning observation hours associated with ESPE 145, all students must complete blood-borne pathogen training.

2. Prior to enrolling in sophomore level athletic training clinical coursework (ESPE 345, 346) students must have the following on file:

  • Signed technical standards
  • Proof of current CPR for the professional rescuer (or equivalent), and first aid certifications
  • Proof of a current health history, immunization review (including Hepatitis B vaccine), and physical examination (performed by an MD, DP, NP, or PA) that verifies a student is able to meet the physical and psychological rigors of the program.  You may use this physical examination form.
  • Proof of annual OSHA training

3. Prior to enrolling in ESPE 445, 446, 545, and 546 students must have the following updates on file:

  • Proof of current CPR for the professional rescuer (or equivalent), and first aid certifications
  • Proof of annual OSHA training

Communicable Disease Policy
As a program in an allied health profession, transmission of communicable disease is of great concern. In order to address this concern, the policy of the Adrian College Athletic Training Education Program is as follows:

  • Any ATS should report any personal illness that might place those they work with at risk of infection to their supervising ACI/CI
  • Any ATS should be examined by a physician or nurse at the Student Health Center if there is any question about the illness
  • Any ATS that is ill and has communicated this to his/her ACI/CI prior to the assigned clinical experience should stay home. This should be considered an excused absence having no effect on the final clinical evaluation.
