Chemistry
AC's
chemistry faculty have led exciting professional
lives. Before coming to Adrian, for example,
Professor Keith McCleary was an industrial scientist
for DuPont and Hewlett-Packard. More recently,
Professor Maher Mualla was selected to be a
Fulbright Scholar at Damascus University in
Syria. As a result of these diverse experiences,
the faculty is well equipped to help students
prepare for dynamic careers. Graduates from
the chemistry department can pursue a future
in forensic science, pharmaceuticals, information
science, biotechnology, environmental engineering,
and electronic networking. Past students have
gone on to graduate programs at the University
of Michigan, Wayne State University School of
Medicine, and Notre Dame University.
Chemistry serves as a stepping
stone to many other fields, such as biology,
physics, earth science, the health sciences,
engineering, and environmental studies. The
department provides rigorous, in-depth courses
in a small, personal setting. You'll work with
sophisticated instrumentation in close partnership
with the faculty, and as a senior, you complete
an original research project. Past projects
have included studies in polymer coatings, peroxidase
kinetics, and chemiluminescence. You'll also
have the opportunity to pursue internships and
summer jobs at major chemical corporations and
laboratories. You may also choose an independent
study project. Recent projects include water
dynamics, fundamental periodic table research,
instrument troubleshooting, and forensic chemistry.
As a student in the chemistry
department, you'll play an active role in the
planning and presentation of the annual chemistry
educational outreach program. The Magic of Science
show is a chance to get elementary, middle school,
and high school students excited about chemistry
by showcasing chemical reactions that involve
flames, explosions, fireworks, and things that
glow in the dark. As a senior, you'll may work
with a professor as an introductory chemistry
lab supervisor, which is excellent preparation
for graduate work or industry work. In addition
to preparing for what's ahead, you'll learn
to see things differently. You'll learn problem-solving
skills, and will hone the invaluable ability
to think analytically and critically.
Chemistry is an excellent
major for students interested in Pre-Med. For
